Proclamation From Governor
The ASLA Colorado Chapter shared that the governor of Colorado declared April 2024 Landscape Architecture Month. In his proclamation, Governor Jared Polis repeatedly highlighted the vital expertise licensed landscape architects bring to protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens and land of Colorado. Though a similar proclamation was made in April 2022, the 2024 document expands on the duties of landscape architects and their role as a partner to the government through designing accessible public and private spaces, creating trails and facilities that encourage active and healthy lifestyles, ensuring safe transportation for all users, and stewarding the land to minimize the damaging effects of floods and other weather events. Governor Polis also added a clause specifying the role of the Colorado Board of Landscape Architecture in issuing licenses to those landscape architects who fulfill all education, examination, and experience requirements. Whereas the 2022 proclamation generally mentions the "many licensed landscape architects in the state," the end of this year's proclamation specifically recognizes the "more than 1,200 individuals licensed to practice landscape architecture in Colorado, including over 800 Colorado residents." Mentions of the word "licensed" throughout the document also doubled from 4 to 8 in this year's announcement. This, combined with the acknowledgement of landscape architecture programs at Colorado State University and University of Colorado Denver, paints a picture of a state government proud of the licensed professionals that serve its land and people.
