by Keziah Olsen, LASN

The Playgrounds Issue of Landscape Architect & Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .
Verde Design, an esteemed landscape architecture firm, was commissioned by the City of Sunnyvale to undertake the comprehensive renovation of Fair Oaks Park. This 15-acre community gem, nestled in Northern Sunnyvale and originally established in 1969, has been reimagined to meet the modern needs of its vibrant community while embracing sustainable practices.

The renovation project underscores the city's commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement. A pivotal element of the redesign is the replacement of traditional athletic field turf with advanced synthetic alternatives for the park's baseball, soccer, and multi-use fields. This marks Sunnyvale's inaugural venture into synthetic turf fields, a strategic choice poised to curtail annual water consumption and ensure uninterrupted playability across seasons, especially during periods of significant rainfall.
In alignment with its vision for inclusive recreation, the park's revitalization also features an innovative all-inclusive playground. This initiative, developed in collaboration with the Magical Bridge Foundation and City staff, aims to create a welcoming and accessible environment for children of all abilities. The project further enhances the park's appeal with upgraded hardcourt facilities, expanded picnic zones, and significant improvements to its circulation and infrastructure systems, fostering a more connected and user-friendly space.
Integral to this transformation is the partnership with FlexGround, an award-winning surfacing installation firm renowned for its expertise in crafting state-of-the-art recreational surfaces. For Fair Oaks Park, FlexGround installed its cutting-edge EnduraFlex poured-in-place rubber, featuring Xtreme Playground Surfacing Coating, specifically engineered for high-wear areas. This proprietary blend of thermoplastic urethane and chemically resistant color coating stands as the park's bastion against premature cracking and granulation, ensuring longevity and resilience.
Complementing the durable surfacing solutions, FlexGround also installed FlexGrass Turf and FlexBond Bonded Poured Rubber Surfacing to the park's landscape. These installations not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also contribute to the park's safety and functionality, aligning with FlexGround's commitment to excellence in playground surfacing, aquatic parks, splash pads, athletic courts, and recreational trails.
Fair Oaks Park's transformation, reinforced by the collaborative synergy between Verde Design and FlexGround, is a testament to innovative design and sustainable practices. This project not only revitalizes a beloved community space but also sets a new standard for recreational environments, ensuring that Fair Oaks Park continues to be a cherished destination for generations to come.
