Fletcher, owned and operated by Structural Stone, LLC, is reemerging as a granite curb fabricator in Massachusetts.
The Chelmsford Quarry in Westford, Massachusetts was opened by Herbert Ellery Fletcher in 1881. This image was taken of the quarry circa 1925.
The Chelmsford Quarry is still in operation, and this is what it looks like today.
Curbs manufactured by Fletcher represent a tradition that goes back to early American roadbuilders.
Today, the Fletcher site has many different models of the most common curb types available for drive-in service.

Fletcher and Chelmsford are synonymous. Chelmsford granite has been quarried in Westford, Massachusetts since the 1800s and has been heavily used in the Eastern United States while supplying stone to projects across the country and overseas. In 1881, Herbert Ellery Fletcher - who was 18 years old at the time - founded the Chelmsford Quarry located at 535 Groton Road, now the only dimensional Chelmsford quarry in operation.

A Legacy
Several generations of the Fletcher family operated the company until the ownership changed hands in 1985 after 104 years of continuous quarrying and fabrication at the Westford site. Fletcher has since changed ownership several times, now owned and operated by the founders of Structural Stone, LLC, a leading North American dimension stone fabricator who brought Fletcher back to its family-owned origin.

"We're part of a stone legacy that co-existed alongside Fletcher for the better half of a century and are humbled by the opportunity to reemerge Fletcher as a leading American granite curb producer."

Historical Excellence
Fletcher has a long history in dimension stone fabrication excellence and has produced the stone for many historic landmarks, including Quincy Market in Boston, Massachusetts; the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; and the Supreme Court Building in Washington, D.C., to name just a few. The company began providing granite for a multitude of bridge projects, ultimately leading to a specialization in the mass production of road curb.

Today, in order to streamline production and offer it to customers at the most competitive price, Fletcher fabricates granite curb only. Since the curb fabrication plant sits on the Chelmsford granite quarry, Fletcher controls its supply, with direct access to the blocks while avoiding hefty transportation charges. With its in-house drafting team, Fletcher provides CAD design for the most complex projects, making it a full-service curb producer. For smaller projects and/or projects with immediate needs, Fletcher maintains a large inventory of the most common curb types at their 100-acre site for drive-up service.

The Next Era
As the Structural Stone facility was revived and re-tooled in 2009, so was Fletcher in early 2024. Structural Stone has successfully completed hundreds of dimensional granite projects up and down the Eastern Seaboard and beyond, and the same quality, workmanship, and service can be expected from Fletcher. From the quarry to sales and estimating down the line to drafting and fabrication, Fletcher's team comprises skilled experts with many that have been in the stone and/or curb industry for the majority of their careers and, in some cases, their entire life. Fletcher has the stone, facility, tooling, and experienced staff to provide notable quality and service that customers deserve, with the assurance that projects will be done accurately and on time.

"Fletcher is deeply rooted in Massachusetts and is the epitome of an American business, making it not only purposeful to the people involved, the state and country, but meaningful to us."

Fletcher is fully open and looks forward to serving New England roadbuilders this season.
