Green Infrastructure with Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavements
CEU Accreditation: LA CES, 1.5; LEED, 1.5; APLD, 1.5
Presented by: David Smith
Friday, February 8th - 10:30 am - 12:00 pm
Course Description:

As a key component to green infrastructure and stormwater runoff reduction, this session highlights green streets, green alleys, and parking lots using examples of permeable interlocking concrete pavement or PICP. Besides reducing river and beach water pollution, this session shows how PICP helps reduce the urban heat island and air pollution, encourages tree growth, and enhances urban character and complete streets. Project examples from California and across the U.S., Canada and overseas are shown to demonstrate how PICP addresses a wide range of urban design and environmental concerns.
In 2011, the author published the 4th edition of the popular manual, Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavements. Over 30,000 copies have been circulated since its first edition in 2000. The LA Expo presentation explains many concepts and technical aspects in this 100-page manual. Specifically, the presentation covers design requirements for PICP and especially focuses on hydrologic and structural design to support vehicular traffic. Construction guidelines are provided with special attention to pre-construction planning, sediment control during construction, and effectively using checklists. Maintenance is vital for long-term pavement performance. The latest information and experience on surface cleaning and repair is provided including video supplements demonstrating effective ways to restore clogged surfaces.
Biography:
David R. Smith is the Technical Director for the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI). With the help of key players in the industry, he started the ICPI in 1993 with 66 charter members. At this writing, the association has over 1000 members representing producers, contractors and suppliers.
Since 1987, he has worked with architects, engineers, landscape architects and contractors in design and construction of every kind of concrete paver project ranging from patios to streets, plus ports and airports. He has written dozens of articles, peer reviewed technical papers, guide specifications, and ICPI Tech Spec technical bulletins on interlocking concrete, permeable, slab and grid pavements, Mr. Smith has also written all or much of three ICPI student and instructor manuals for segmental concrete pavement contractors and taught many classes. Also, he authored three design idea books for residential, commercial and municipal applications issued by Schiffer Publishing. He has also contributed to ICPI engineering design manuals for port and airport pavements constructed with interlocking concrete pavements.
Smith's background in stormwater management comes from infiltration research on concrete grid pavements in the early 1980s at Virginia Tech, as well as teaching and modeling storm drainage design with sustainable, site-scale stormwater management approaches and stream restoration. More recently, Mr. Smith contributed to the concept and development of ICPI?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Permeable Design Pro software for PICP.
His education includes a bachelor of Architecture and masters of Urban and Regional Planning with a concentration in environmental planning from Virginia Tech. He is a jazz drummer, enjoys bike riding and scuba diving.
