Conway School of Landscape Design; Ashfield, Massachusetts
Walter Cudnohufsky, PLA ASLA, is a pioneering educator and practitioner whose visionary leadership transformed landscape architecture education and helped shape the field's focus on ecological design. As the founder of the Conway School of Landscape Design, he created an innovative graduate program that, for more than five decades, has prepared designers to address complex environmental and social challenges through real-world, systems-based learning. Cudnohufsky is exceptional for redefining how landscape architecture is taught. In 1972, he left a traditional academic position to establish a one-year, immersive program centered on hands-on projects for real clients. This model-now widely recognized as ahead of its time-integrates ecological science, community engagement, and design thinking. Students work across regional, local, and site scales, gaining practical experience while advancing solutions for issues such as climate resilience, land conservation, and social equity. Under his leadership, the Conway School became a quiet but powerful force in the profession. Its more than 800 alumni have gone on to lead projects and organizations around the world, carrying forward its principles of sustainability, collaboration, and stewardship. Collectively, students have completed over 1,400 projects for communities, nonprofits, and municipalities, creating lasting impacts on landscapes and the people who depend on them. Beyond education, Cudnohufsky has maintained an active practice and contributed to planning, writing, and community initiatives that reinforce the connection between people and place. His work consistently emphasizes clear communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a deep respect for natural systems. Through bold vision and lifelong dedication, Walter Cudnohufsky has reshaped landscape architecture education and inspired generations of practitioners to design with purpose, empathy, and ecological responsibility.
