The Industry Myths That Refuse to Die
In drainage and waterproofing, bad ideas don't disappear-they get repeated, repackaged, and resold.
• "Water will find its way anyway." (Usually said right before someone avoids fixing grading.)
• "A drain here should take care of it." (Without calculating volume, slope,
or discharge.)
• "We've always done it this way." (Often true-and often the problem.)
These phrases persist because they lower the immediate burden of doing things correctly. They also happen to align perfectly with minimizing effort while maximizing short-term profit.
Water, unfortunately, does not respond to optimism or tradition. It responds to physics.
Contractor Mistakes: Predictable, Repeatable, Preventable
Most drainage failures are not mysterious-they are patterned.
• Installing perforated pipe without proper gravel or fabric (guaranteeing clogging).
• Ignoring slope verification
(creating underground water storage instead of movement).
• Treating roof runoff as an afterthought rather than a primary water source. "
• Watershed calculations disregard.
• Failing to design a proper discharge point (sending water to "somewhere over there").
These are not edge cases. They are routine oversights, often driven by time pressure, cost-cutting, or lack of supervision.
The uncomfortable truth: many systems fail exactly as they were built to.
Advanced Systems: Where Precision Actually Matters
As complexity increases-hillsides, retaining walls, hydrostatic pressure-the margin for error disappears.
• Hillside drainage requires interception, not just redirection. Water moving downhill must be captured before it builds momentum and pressure.
• Retaining walls demand layered systems: backdrain, gravel, fabric, and weep relief. Miss one, and the wall becomes a dam.
