Charleston, South Carolina
This hospitality project located in downtown Charleston, South Carolina was designed by SeamonWhiteside (SW+) who drew inspiration from Charleston's layered history and its celebrated tradition of intimate courtyards. SW+ provided landscape architecture, civil engineering, and construction administration services and carried the workload for all horizontal design aspects for this project and gracefully navigated sensitive historic neighborhood stakeholder engagement, City of Charleston Board of Architectural Review, and Technical Review Committee. The site's historical significance as the estimated site of Charleston's Liberty Tree which was a foundational piece of the American Revolution in South Carolina. While the tree does not stand today, a historical marker was placed adjacent to the site to speak to its significant history.
The Hilton Liberty project transforms a constrained urban site into a richly detailed public garden where hardscape becomes the primary storytelling medium. The design is grounded in a careful balance between permanence and softness where brick, stone, and ironwork establish a sense of timelessness, while lush planting and filtered light bring the space to life.
