The Active Transportation Infrastructure Investment Program (ATIIP) will provide funds for sidewalks, bikeways, and trails that foster connectivity between vital community locations.

The U.S Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) opened applications for a new grant program offering $44.5 million to fund projects aimed at improving safety and pedestrian access to important community locations. The Active Transportation Infrastructure Investment Program (ATIIP) focuses on modes of transportation that require human energy and, according to U.S. Transportation Deputy Secretary Polly Trottenberg, will "support projects that enable people to walk, bike, and roll safely to school, work, transit, health care facilities, and other destinations."

 
The goal of the ATIIP is threefold: 1) facilitate access to public transportation, 2) increase community connectivity, 3) improve local air quality and overall community health by enabling fewer car trips. Projects that align with these goals can apply for a Planning & Design Grant or a Construction Grant between $100,000 and $15 million. At the time of writing, the closing date for applications is June 17, 2024.
