Pearl Park at Cypress View

Los Angeles, California
by BORDER

Pearl Park creates a shared landscape for the Watts neighborhood, offering gardens of varied scale, amenities, and programs that support daily life and community health. Through shade, planting, and water, the park establishes a place that feels grounded, vibrant, and alive.

The Playgrounds Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Pearl Park at Cypress View is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

Meeting the need for meaningful open space and affordable housing in Los Angeles, BRIDGE Housing, in partnership with the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles, developed Cypress View, a community shaped by access, comfort, and connection to nature. Planted paseos, residential garden courts, and Pearl Park establish a landscape that supports everyday life through shade, water, and planting.

Part of HACLA's historic redevelopment of the Jordan Downs housing community in Watts, Cypress View features abundant planting and shade trees that wrap the park and soften the transition between public and private space. Ground-floor apartment entries open directly into gardens that provide moments of quiet, identity, and care for residents. Large trees and lightweight shade sails offer immediate relief from the heat, creating places for people to gather, play, and socialize. Water features, ping pong tables, and long communal tables encourage daily activity and strengthen connections between families and neighbors.

The landscape is playful and exuberant, anchored by sculpted landforms saturated with color and movement in the children's play area. Bright orange benches trace the organic forms and pathways, giving kids and parents places to pause, watch, and connect. A small water feature cools the space and links the play gardens to the nearby BBQ terrace, where families gather in the evenings and on weekends, extending the life of the park into the surrounding community.
