Rancho Mission Viejo, California
by RJM Design Group

By combining aesthetic, ecological, and recreational considerations, Boulder Pond Park demonstrates how thoughtful landscape design can create a functional and visually compelling community space.

The Parks Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Boulder Pond Park is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

Boulder Pond Park transforms a challenging site into a vibrant recreational hub that fosters community connections within Rancho Mission Viejo. Designed to serve residents of all ages, the park features a striking split-level pond with a cascading waterfall, offering both ecological benefits and aesthetic appeal. Nature-themed play areas, thoughtfully designed walking paths, and shaded gathering spaces create an inviting environment that balances active and passive recreation. Environmental stewardship was central to the design, with native, low-water-use plant materials, heritage oak tree transplants, and habitat-enhancing pond features. Despite complex site constraints, the project seamlessly integrates with surrounding amenities, creating a dynamic promenade that strengthens neighborhood connectivity. Boulder Pond Park exemplifies how innovative landscape architecture can overcome physical site challenges to deliver a sustainable, multi-generational community destination.

The design responds directly to site challenges, including a steep northern slope and a narrow layout, through strategic grading and deep-rooted hillside plantings that provide both stabilization and visual interest. Two docks extend over the pond, offering residents opportunities to engage with the water and its ecological features, including a fish habitat designed for potential stocking and mosquito control. Custom play elements with water-inspired surfacing engage children, while benches, tables, bike racks, and other site furnishings enhance usability and comfort for all visitors. Large heritage oaks transplanted from elsewhere within the development provide shade and maturity, reinforcing the park's natural character.
