Center Stage

Indio, California
by Hermann Design Group

Center Stage stands as a model of landscape architecture's capacity to shape resilient, engaging, and enduring public spaces, transforming Indio's downtown into a destination where culture, community, and environment thrive together.

The Parks Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Center Stage is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

The Center Stage project transforms downtown Indio into a vibrant civic heart that showcases the transformative power of landscape architecture. Once an underutilized space, the site is now an active, inclusive public realm that strengthens community identity, fosters economic vitality, and celebrates Indio's desert heritage.

Design excellence is reflected in the project's sensitive integration of ecology, culture, and climate. Mature palm trees were preserved to provide natural shade and continuity with the city's historic landscape. Durable materials, native and drought-tolerant plantings, and flexible open spaces respond to the Coachella Valley's arid environment while minimizing maintenance and resource use.

Center Stage was conceived as a multi-functional landscape-a venue that effortlessly transitions from concerts and movie nights to fitness classes, artisan markets, and cultural festivals. This flexibility ensures year-round activation and fosters a deeper connection between people and place.

The project has catalyzed social and economic renewal, attracting residents and visitors alike to experience downtown Indio in new ways. Events such as the "Second Saturdays" performances and local talent Abi Carter's "American Idol" homecoming have brought national attention and reinforced civic pride.
