The Lighting Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Colorado Mountain Retreat is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.
The front yard, once hidden behind overgrown vegetation that masked the home's natural stonework and architectural character, was redesigned to reveal its structure and create a warm, welcoming approach. In back, the property opens to sloping terrain and dense vegetation that climb toward the mountainside - offering both privacy and a sense of retreat. The lighting design became an essential part of this transformation, developed to extend interior views outward, add visual depth and balance, and enhance security in an area where nightly bear visits are not uncommon.
A combination of techniques was used to achieve this harmony. Spot and accent lights highlight key architectural features and natural stone textures, while downlighting from trees adds dimension and direction across drives and walkways. Pathway lighting was applied sparingly to preserve the property's natural rhythm and respect the nocturnal environment. The result is a landscape that feels polished yet organic - an illuminated refuge where thoughtful design meets mountain tranquility, and each evening reveals a new layer of beauty beneath Colorado's starlit sky.
