Douglasville Town Green & GreyStone Amphitheater

Douglasville, Georgia
by TSW Design

The amphitheater and park create year-round opportunities for events and recreation, fostering economic development and social equity. This once-blighted site is now a thriving community space that serves as a catalyst for downtown revitalization.

The Parks Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Douglasville Town Green & GreyStone Amphitheater is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

Through a multi-year, community-driven planning and implementation process, the Douglasville Town Green emerged as a bold new civic anchor that transformed a former county jail site into a signature public space. Completed in 2023, the project includes a contemporary amphitheater, adaptive reuse of jail structures into event spaces, flexible greenspace, splash pad, play zones, and trail connections.

Unique elements of the project include:
• Adaptive reuse of portions of the former jail

• Sustainable features (e.g. collection of water from the amphitheater roof, splash pad, and storm system for site irrigation; native plantings, permeable surfaces)
• Reuse of reclaimed boulders found on-site during construction as site design elements and construction fill.
• Design and form: creation a signature contemporary design for the outdoor amphitheater and companion buildings for entertainment and community events. The community desired a contrasting architectural design language to their largely historic, mercantile style downtown.
• Integration of artful, sculptural features as play elements, gateways, landscape elements, and splash pad fountain.
• Locally inspired design details (e.g. fence bracing - repeated element from old jail bridge; gateway arch inspired by local historic mill; play boulders mimicking local outcrops)

Numerous project accolades include:
• 2025 Atlanta Regional Commission Regional Excellence Award
• 2025 Georgia Downtown Association Award of Excellence, Outstanding Public Improvement Project
• 2025 Georgia ASLA Honor Award
• 2024 Georgia ACVB TravelBlazers Award
