The heart of The Sanctuary will be the 60 larger-than-life bronze sculptures, crafted by 10 world-class artists, including George Lundeen, Martin Eichenger, Rob Arps, Joey Bainer, Dee Clements, Ann Larose, Lynn Kircher, Bets Lundeen, Mark Lundeen and Thomas Jay Warren. These extraordinary works of art will tell the story of Christ's journey to Calvary identifying the 14 encounters he had along this path of sorrows, known as Via Dolorosa. Each sculpture will capture a moment of profound humanity and divine love.
Following a half-mile circuitous path, visitors will experience a gentle journey through the landscape that blends seamlessly with the art. The bronze sculptures will rise dramatically against the natural backdrop, inviting contemplation. An individualized self-guided audio tour will guide the way, allowing each person to pause, reflect and pray at their own pace.
Since the initial land purchase in 2019, the project has developed steadily. The site now has five completed stations while site improvements and infrastructure continue. The main opportunity ahead is securing the remaining funds needed to bring the project to completion.
Mark and Toni Jones were looking for a project to support that included their faith. "The artistic vision is impeccable," says Mark. "A remarkable talent is evident in the ability of taking the land and sculpting it in a way that creates a journey of discovery. I hope it becomes a legacy for future generations - a spiritual landmark."
The Sanctuary continues to unfold as a living testament. It reminds us that art, when born of devotion, can still pierce the heart, draw wanderers' home, and strengthen believers. In this sacred space amid the trees and the art, Christ's journey endures, inviting all who come to find solace, meaning and, perhaps, redemption.

The Sanctuary
Augusta, Michigan
The Sanctuary is a spiritual nature park located in Augusta, Michigan that celebrates Christ's journey on the last day of his life (Stations of the Cross). The project is on 75 wooded and hilly acres, and it includes 15 larger than life size bronze sculptures.
All the services for this project are pro bono, including the services done by Trevor Boswarth, PLA. A great deal of simulated rock work, like the rock work done in zoos, was done to create the platforms for the statues. The project's expected completion date is March 2027. Near Gull Lake in Augusta, Michigan, lies a place where faith meets art. Here, on 82 acres of preserved natural beauty stands The Sanctuary, a remarkable outdoor sculpture park born from a vision to make the story of Christ's Passion not just read, but walked, felt, and lived.
The project began in December 2019, when a small group of devoted lay faithful saw an opportunity in a parcel of land that seemed destined for something greater. With one year to secure the funds, 17 families came together to purchase the property.
