Foxhill at St. George's Road

Baltimore, Maryland
by FORM Garden Design

Terraced retaining walls at the front and back of the house reshape the grade and extend the architecture into the land, creating new outdoor rooms and improving the approach sequence. These interventions unify the property while setting the stage for a layered planting design that celebrates texture, light, and seasonality.

The Residential Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Foxhill at St. George's Road is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

Once part of a larger Roland Park estate, the Saint George's Road property was subdivided in the 1960s, separating its historic walled garden from the original manor and leaving the 1970s prairie-style home with a steep, fragmented landscape. When the current owners purchased the property, FORM Garden Design was brought in to reimagine the site as a cohesive and expressive landscape that balances structure, ecology, and softness.

Plantings shift in character across the site, evolving from a stylized wildflower prairie at the entry to more rhythmic, naturalistic combinations around the house, and finally to structured woodland plantings at the rear. The productive garden near the pool integrates ornamental and edible layers-fruit trees, vegetables, and perennial edibles-creating sensory richness and daily delight. Lower on the site, a bioswale and rain garden planted with native ferns, sedges, and grasses manage stormwater while blending seamlessly with the surrounding woodland edge.

The resulting landscape is both modern and timeless-a living composition that balances concrete and stone with an ever-changing tapestry of plant life. Thoughtful preservation and design have transformed the once-disjointed site into a serene, ecologically grounded refuge in the heart of Baltimore.
